Hi Bill,
It may be unfair to Swiss banks to blame them for the activity described in yesterday's Midas. The truth is UBS and Credit Suisse are no longer Swiss banks at all.

Lips alludes to this in Gold Wars, Brimelow here:

and the documentary "The Final Insult" at Norman Finkelstein's site gives part of the answer:

…I looked into using UBS until I found they like Credit Suisse are subject to US control because of their extensive activities here. The cantonal banks like Zurcher Kantonalbank, St Galler Kantonalbank are still Swiss and independent, as are the smaller private banks. Chris

Re. Swiss accounts, stay away from UBS and Credit Suisse--because of their extensive business inside the USA they are de facto American banks.

You're better off with one of the Cantonal banks. The biggest and easiest to deal with for a non-German speaker may be the Zurich Cantonal Bank, the third largest bank in Switzerland with a AAA rating: www.zkb.ch

But some of the smaller Cantonal Banks will let you get away with a smaller minimum deposit both for savings and investment. For example, the St. Galler Kantonalbank: www.skgb.ch

Another excellent bank worth a close look is Swiss First bank affiliated with LGT.
